Marvel VS DC at SDCC

Finally it seems, after years of dark dark, gritty, ominous movies, that DC has finally started to get their act together and may now be a viable rival for Marvel Studios.

DC showed off a Wonder Woman trailer, that put a sock in the mouth of all of the Gal Gadot doubters. We got to see a Justice League teaser, which in itself is no mean feat, considering the movie is still filming. Oh and at last, we get to see Batman/Bruce Wayne do something other than wallow in a pool of melancholy and rage. Perhaps the levity of the Suicide Squad is the springboard that was needed for a new, considerably less angsty era for DC.

Marvel had a ton of stuff to show, although granted, their cinematic universe has been going for much longer at this point. We got trailers for Doctor Strange, and we got to bask in the glory of Benedict’s chiselled face, Thor: Ragnarok, where we got a sneak peek at Hulk in gladiator armour, Spider-Man:Homecoming, which has Peter Parker actually in school, without being rushed through to adulthood, and last but not least, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, bringing the band back together for more hi-jinks and a slathering of jokes, with of course a helping of baby Groot!

What does the future hold?

There’s a rumour going around that Margot Robbie may have a spin-off movie from the Suicide Squad. My oh my, whatever could this be… Gotham Girls? Gotham City Sirens? Harley & Ivy? Maybe even Birds of Prey? Ah so many choices, and as a massive Harley Quinn fan, I really hope it’s true.

Marvel conspicuously failed to drop any details about the next two Avengers movies, however we did get confirmation of Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan and Danai Gurira for Black Panther. Then of course we got the big reveal of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.  I am so happy to finally see some traction on that one.

So, in this epic battle of studios, who won? DC got in some good punches, but Marvel has been consistently on the ball. This year Marvel wins, but if DC keep upping their game, then who knows what will happen next year?

I can’t wait for all of these movies. I think I’m going to spend all of next year in the cinema, surviving on a diet of popcorn and chocolate buttons. What are you looking forward to, or are there any films that you are straight up avoiding? Let me know in the comments, I can’t wait to hear your opinion. xx
